St. Dominic, pray for us!

In 1214 St. Dominic, distraught about the sins and heresies of his time, prayed and fasted for three days. At the end of this time Mary appeared to him accompanied by three angels and said,

“Dear Dominic, do you know which weapon the Blessed Trinity wants to use to reform the world?”

Dominic Answered:

“Oh, my Lady you know far better than I do, because next to your Son Jesus Christ you have always been the chief instrument of our salvation.”

Mary replied,

“I want you to know that, in this kind of warfare, the principal weapon has always been the Angelic Psalter, which is the foundation-stone of the New Testament. Therefore, if you want to reach these hardened souls and win them over to God, preach my Psalter.”

Once when Dominic was preparing a sermon Mary appeared and said,

“Dominic, even though what you have planned to say may be very good, I am bringing you a much better sermon.”

Dominic went on to preach a powerful sermon, teaching others to pray the Holy Rosary (for more on Rosary go here), which drew many to Christ and His Mother.

“One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” St. Dominic

According to Blessed Alan de la Roche, after Mary had appeared, Jesus appeared to Dominic and said,

“Dominic, I rejoice to see that you are not relying on your own wisdom and that, rather than seek the empty praise of men, you are working with great humility for the salvation of souls…But many priests want to preach thunderously against the worst kinds of sin at the very outset, failing to realize that before a sick person is given bitter medicine, he needs to be prepared by being put into the right frame of mind to really benefit by it.
“That is why, before doing anything else, priests should try to kindle a love of prayer in people’s hearts and especially a love of my Angelic Psalter. If only they would all start saying it and would really persevere, God in his mercy could hardly refuse to give them his grace. So I want you to preach my Rosary.”

St. Dominic founded the Dominican order in 1215 and continued throughout the rest of his days to teach the Holy Rosary; converting many to the faith.

Blessed Alan de la Roche, one of Dominic’s sons, was a Dominican priest who reestablished devotion to the Most Holy Rosary in 1460, fostering the continuation of this devotion up to our current day.

May we have the grace to follow in the footsteps of St. Dominic and Blessed Alan by fostering this most powerful devotion so needed in our time.

“I look to all of you, brothers and sisters of every state of life, to you, Christian families, to you, the sick and elderly, and to you, young people: confidently take up the Rosary once again. Rediscover the Rosary in the light of Scripture, in harmony with the liturgy, and in the context of your daily lives.

“May this appeal of mine not go unheard! (St. Pope John Paul II, Rosarium)
